About Our Beagliers

Beagliers – A mix of Beagliers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.  They are a small breed ranging around 15-25 lbs. – Our Beagliers in Photos

While there are alot of other pages out there with Beaglier info I’ll be mainly commenting on what I already know about the breed and what I know about our dogs.

First thing to know is they are very good natured dogs.  They seem to have the best qualities from both mixes.  However, between our two dogs I have noticed different attributes in each, which makes sense as they are a mix and not a full-blooded pedigree.

MARIBELLE

Let’s start with Maribelle. She is a tri-color of black, brown and white and she is about 1 year and 3 months as of Dec. 2009.  She was mine and my wife’s first dog together. Deep down I wanted a big dog but I knew that I’d cave to whatever kind my wife wanted. She picked beagliers after much online research about other dog mixes, like puggles etc.

I won’t deny she picked a good breed. Maribelle is absolutely beautiful. Her personality is very good natured. She loves other dogs and adores people. She is very, very smart. She learned to ring a bell in less than a week to go to the bathroom. I can barely remember the last time she really used the bathroom in the house. Okay, I can, but that was a long poop filled night with curses and screams. Don’t worry, the little girl was safe in the arms of my wife wondering why the guy downstairs was so mad.

Other than that she has been perfect in the way of going outside. She’s dainty like a girl so you can’t rush her. Because she was our first dog we worried after her at every second. Because of this and the fact that I am a work-at-home computer nerd, she has become a little OCD.

She can stare. And by stare, I mean she can stare you down for hours waiting for any movement or attention in her direction. I could sit at my computer working and see her to my left…staring intently.

She also taught herself how to fetch. I wish I could say it was all me and Pat, but honestly, it was herself and her newly found OCD nature that taught her that if she brings the ball to me and I throw it, she could return it and get all the attention she wants and rightfully deserves. She’ll go so far as to drop the ball right in your hands if you aren’t actively grabbing for it.

This behavior has come in more handy than anything else. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that no matter how many dogs, how many people are around that I can have her undivided attention at all times by simply waving a tennis ball in her face. I use this technique alot when out at the dog park. She’s not like her younger brother who goes completely insane at the dog park and never ever stops running from dog to dog and person to person while there. But he’s another story altogether.

She loves…no, needs to sleep under a blanket. If she has her way, she’ll be under a blanket AND curled up next to a living person. Preferably me because she’s a freak for me. Sure, I know it’s a little weird for my dog to walk up to me while on the couch, walk her two front paws right up my chest and then for lack of a better word, hug me then lick my glasses. It’s a full on hug and we can only attribute it to the breeder who we witnessed carrying her around in much the same way when we went to pick her up for the first time. Very sweet but a little annoying when in the middle of a good movie…or dinner.

Overall, Maribelle is an amazing dog. She loves us and she loves her little brother. She never leaves our side if she can help it and I’ve still never seen her to this day be actually mean to another living being. Yes, she does tend to whoop up on her brother but isn’t that what older siblings are for?

If I had to pick out two negative things about Maribelle it would be her nose. Her nose is on caliber with drug-sniffing dogs. She can find anything. If we hide a ball she is tearing up and eating (which is the other problem) then she can find it in the house no matter where it is. Behind a closed closet door in box. She’ll sit there and stare until you find whatever it is. Normally it’s something we should have thrown away but being lazy people…we choose simply to hide it.

And as I mentioned, she and her brother will eat anything and everything. From shoes to acorns (a no-no) to glass to christmas ornaments to poop and back. I know most of that is normal but it does wear on one’s patience. That is until she gives you the sad eyes and the ear droop. She wins everytime.

Butters:

Butters/Ziggy is a tan and white beaglier boy roughly five-six months youner than Maribelle.  As of today he is around nine months in Dec. 2009.

What can we say about Butters?  Originally when we started talking about getting another Bealgier we went through many boy dog names to end up on what we believed to be the perfect name: Ziggy Stardust.  We are David Bowie fans and thought this would be a fun name.

We decided to change his name within the first few days of being getting him home. After witnessing him in action it just hit me one day.  Ziggy didn’t fit.  It didn’t fit at all.  This was a name for a sophisticated dog.  A dog with flair and grace.  This was not our dog at all.  He had no grace.  He hit his head on everything.  He’d fall off the couch.

He is an entirely different animal than Maribelle.   His nose isn’t nearly as developed.   He took much longer to learn to go outside only though my wife and I agree this was totally our fault.  He is very independent. While Maribelle cannot stand to not be around us for too long you can often find Butters outside in the backyard alone sitting in the sun eating a stick. Or shoe, or bug, or acorn etc.

For anyone that is Southpark TV show fan, you’ll understand.  On the show there is a character named Butters.  An animated cartoon boy who has no common sense whatsoever and is the essence of innocence all at the same time.  The name stuck.  Butters it would be.

Butters has this look in his face that is at once so perfectly cute and yet so indifferent. His tail wags constantly.  He can’t help it.  It just wags and wags.   It’s like a disease that only effects the tail.  He’s a happy little boy.

He sits funny.  His body shape is longer than that of his sister’s and because of this, he tends to sit like a human. Often times we’ll turn to look at him and he’ll be leaning with his back on the couch in a sitting position with is paws pulled to his little chest.   Damn it’s cute.

He also loves the blankets and to cuddle just like Maribelle.  I believe we have spoiled them a tad bit.

Butters knows no tricks.  He never took to the bell and the ball is besides the point.

One thing he does love without a shadow of a doubt is his big sister.  He loves her and most of his everyday attention is on her.  They play constantly.  We have a fenced in back yard and it is a wrestle, tag, chase match most of the time they are out there.  If I throw the ball for Maribelle who promptly takes off after it you can rest assured that Butters is in hot pursuit to take a nip out of her behind as she retrieves it and makes a break back to me.

The Beagliers Together

They do sleep in the same area together each night.  We tried at first to have them sleep in seperate crates but he would not have it.  Whined like a little girl.  We tried having them sleep together one night and they haven’t slept apart since.

I have an area gated off for them beside the bed.  It’s pretty plush with a nice cushion, sheet and blanket.  Jeesh, now that I typed that I realize we do spoil them.  Well, crap.

They love their bed.  And when it’s bed time they know to head straight for their bed where that one guy always puts a blanket over them.  He’s swell.

They are the first things I see when I wake up.  Both of them staring at me, mentally willing me to get up and take them to the bathroom.  They have strong mental powers.  Well, Maribelle does anyway.  We’re still holding out for Butters.

Okay, my fingers are tired and I’ve started to ramble.  You get the idea.  Beagliers = great dogs.  With even a little training these guys can go far.  They love and love back.  They don’t bark much and are never mean.

There you have it.
